Kylie Jenner's Record For The Most-Liked Picture On Instagram Beaten By An Egg
These days, social media is of the utmost importance - regardless of what industry you work in. Even if you're just a crafty person with a cool small business, unless you've got some sort of online presence, it's more than likely that your customer base will be limited, to say the least. And while most of us would like more wholesome content from people with actual talent on our newsfeed, more often than not, it's people who're famous for seemingly nothing who dominate our timelines.
Case in point, 21-year-old makeup mogul Kylie Jenner who had the most-liked picture on Instagram when she announced the birth of her daughter, Stormi. Now, I'm not here to bash Jenner (heck, her toenails are probably worth more money than I'm ever going to earn in my lifetime), however, it's safe to say that if even if you aren't a fan of the Kardashian-Jenner clan, you're going to know a fair bit about them, and, like me, acquired that information entirely against your will.
So, in a bid to reclaim Instagram for the people, an account of one of the most mundane things imaginable was created in an attempt to beat Jenner's record: namely, a single solitary picture of an egg.
The picture was posted with the following caption: "Let's set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram. Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)! We got this."
And, incredibly, despite the fact that there was no pout or badly kept pregnancy reveal in the picture, the humble egg beat Jenner's record and, as of Monday the 14th of January, has over 25 million likes on photosharing website, as of this writing.
In addition to beating Jenner's record, the egg also became the only image not containing a human to become one of the 20 most liked pictures on Instagram. And the likes are still rolling in.
Hilariously, Jenner's picture has now been trolled with countless egg-related comments. Oh, the internet.
In response to the egg beating her record, Jenner posted the following video on Instagram:
Jenner captioned the video above, "Take that little egg."
But this impressive feat of fighting back against the pointless celebrities will, unfortunately, do nothing to change the fact that Kylie will still receive wads of cash for sponsored posts on a regular basis.
And while Jenner might have lost her record for the most-liked picture on Instagram, she still has the most-viewed video. It features the 21-year-old dancing to Dirrty by Xtina and has almost 50 million views.
Haven't seen Instagram's most-viewed video yet? Here it is...
This, however, is not the first time that the good people of the internet have grouped together with one goal in mind.
In 2017, a man named Carter Wilkerson asked Wendy's how many retweets he'd need for a year of free chicken nuggets. The chain then replied with an impossible challenge: 18 million.
And while Wilkerson sadly didn't hit 18 million retweets, he did knock Ellen DeGeneres off the top spot for the most retweeted picture on the micro-blogging website - her infamous Oscar's selfie, which had 3.3 million retweets.
Wilkerson's nugget campaign, on the other hand, received an impressive 3.5 million retweets.
Wendy's didn't let Wilkerson's efforts go to waste, either. And while he didn't achieve his dream of getting a year's worth of free chicken nuggets, he did get $1,000 worth of gift cards, which is basically the same thing.
To see the moment Carter met Ellen, check out the video below:
He told Delish: "They'd done the math and figured if I got a 4-piece every day for a little more than a year, that's about what it would cost. [The flexibility of having the gift cards] was kind of nice because I didn't have to just get chicken nuggets."
One thing's for sure: Wilkerson and that humble egg are the heroes we need to keep in mind as we begin 2019.
