The 15 Rules Rich People Swear By That You're Getting Completely Wrong

It's an unfortunate reality of life that money is what makes the world go around. While some people are a lot more money motivated than others, unless you're lucky enough to be a millionaire (in which case, I hate you), you can probably attest to the fact that you could do with a little more of 'dem dollar bills - even if Sia claims that she can have fun without them.

So, aside from winning the lottery or doing something illegal, how can you make that happen? Do rich people just get seriously lucky or is there more to their success than meets the eye? Well, since we could all do with a little more dough in our lives, the habits of the rich have been analyzed, and it turns out that the more wealthy people out there follow these 15 rules.

1. Talk less and listen more

As much as it's a cliché, a wise man speaks because he has something to say and a fool speaks because he wants to be heard. While this doesn't apply so much to friends, when you're in the workplace, it's crucial. As Steve Jobs said, "It doesn't make sense to hire smart people and then tell them what to do, we hire smart people so they can tell us what to do."

2. Don't stay in the office

If you shake up your working environment it will, in turn, shake up your job and how successful you are. So, if possible, arrange that meeting elsewhere. It will help expand your perspective, knowledge, and network more than sitting at a desk will.

3. Be careful about who you chose as friends

My mom's always said: "Tell me who your company is and I'll tell you who you are." While this was frustrating when I was younger, now that I'm older, I can appreciate her point. Friendships really shape who we are as people and that's why it's important to surround yourself with friends who raise you up and encourage you to be the best version of yourself.

4. Know when to take a break

While working hard is all well and good, it shouldn't come at the expense of your mental health. If you're tired and burnt out, you'll be much more likely to make mistakes. That's why successful people know when enough is enough and take a break.

5. Never stop learning

It's easy to dupe yourself into thinking that when your classroom days are over, you know everything you need to know to be successful. In reality, however, success is much more likely when you're constantly acquiring new knowledge and skills.

6. Spending your time wisely

These days, it's easier than ever before to waste time. And while endlessly scrolling through social media can be entertaining, it's far from productive. Spending an hour at the gym, however, will help improve your physical stamina and the benefits which regular exercise can have on your mind are well documented too. There are only 24 hours in a day. Don't waste them.

7. Have a source of passive income

While most of us might assume that rich people spend a lot more cash on designer clothes and cars, they don't. Why pay $200 for a shirt that you can get a similar version of it for $30? Successful people know how to make their money work for them.

8. Read daily

Just like social media, watching TV can eat up a large amount of our time, but do nothing to improve our lives for the better. Rich Habits: The Daily Success Habits Of Wealthy Individuals, however, found that successful people tend to choose books over TV. In fact, 88% of wealthy people read for half an hour a day - a statistic which really does speak for itself.

9. Put yourself first

Being successful is no mean feat, but it's a feat that's a lot easier when you take care of yourself. That's why it's so important that you look after your body and mind to give yourself the best possible chance. Whether that involves getting up an extra 10 minutes earlier to make yourself a wholesome breakfast or simply taking a warm bubble bath after a hard day at the office.

10. Keep a planner

One of the biggest keys to success is having clearly thought out goals and targets. Successful people have planners that document everything from their daily to-do lists to what exactly they are hoping to achieve in a year. They also document trivial things in their planners too like their worries and dreams - it frees up more space in their minds for the really important stuff.

11. Learn how to be flexible

We live in a world that's constantly changing and it affects everything in our lives. This is especially true of the world of business where a successful money-making scheme can suddenly yield barely a cent from one day to the next. Successful people, however, are able to adapt to an ever-changing environment. Basically, it's survival of the fittest - and most flexible.

12. Take risks

You can't achieve huge success by following the crowd. Think about it - it's people who've brake the mold who consistently make it big. When J.K. Rowling was a penniless single mother, she could have devoted her spare time to working freelance or another activity that would make her some instant cash, but she had a story she believed in and, well, look where she is now.

13. Communicate clearly

One of the biggest sources of angst in almost every area of life is poor communication. It can cause a host of problems, and nowhere is that more apparent in the workplace. Successful people, however, are able to communicate what they want clearly and because there's no room for misinterpretation, things will likely pan out the way they want them to.

14. Understanding your "why?"

Making money is all well and good, but when you set out with a purpose, whether it's simply creating the best version of a product, you'll immediately stand out from the crowd. It'll also give you bags of determination which will help in the long run.

15. Know that you can succeed

Never underestimate the power of positive thinking when it comes to achieving your dreams. If you have an idea or a goal and you can visualize it happening, then it's much more likely that it will. A negative attitude is not conducive to success.

So there you have it - 15 rules followed by rich people. Do you follow any of them already? And more pertinently, is there any that you'll be incorporating into your life to become more successful and therefore richer? After all, we all want to do something worthwhile with our lives, and I'm all for any tips and tricks that make that path to success easier to walk.
