Hilarious Home Renovation Fails That Will Put You Off DIY For Life

Ah, DIY. It's something which we all have to do at some point in our lives. After all, we live in the era of flatpack furniture - and let's face it, with the rising cost of living, the temptation to skip hiring a professional can be overwhelming. But before you pop to your local hardware store, it's probably a good idea to remember that it takes years of training to become a professional...

So when we Average Joes pick up hammers and saws in a bid to save money and create the homes of our dreams, things are bound to go wrong. In fact, things often to so wrong that they can borderline on deadly - and if they don't put anyone's life in danger, they can leave whoever created the DIY disaster red-faced when they're left with something like a squinty toilet.

1. Sink before you renovate!

alt

This picture is a testament to why you should always hire a professional when you don't know what you're doing. Not only is the placement of this water faucet insane, it's incredibly dangerous - and no one wants to get killed by their own stupidity.

2. This garage from the future

alt

How the hell are you supposed to get your car inside? Perhaps it's for a yet-to-be-invented levitating vehicle.

3. A driveway at an almost 90-degree angle

alt

Now, this dodgy renovation really would be putting a car's 4x4‎ ability to the test. The only upside to it that I can see is that it would be fun to sled down in the winter, but can you imagine how dangerous it would be trying to walk up again? No thanks.

4. Opposite houses don't attract

alt

Usually, when a person hires a contractor to build an extension, the first thing they discuss is how it will blend seamlessly into their existing home, which is why this monstrosity is on this list. It looks like two different buildings have been glued together!

5. There are door frames and then there are door frames...

alt

The only situation where a zigzag door frame like this would be acceptable would be in a concept art exhibition.

6. The slanting toilet

alt

Can you imagine if a man with a bad aim used this? That would be one frustrating cleanup operation.

7. The halfway driveway

alt

Yeah, whoever decided to stop building this driveway halfway across the lawn really doesn't get what driveways are for...

8. This toilet roll holder that has no business being next to a bathtub

alt

Who in their right mind would want to jump off the pearly throne to wipe? Talk about inconvenient placement.

9. These very small tiles

alt

This is why you should always hire a professional. Us Average Joes can't measure out DIY materials correctly.

10. Watch your head!

alt

Unless the owners of this house are particularly small people, then there's no way of justifying the placement of this staircase - and even if they are under 4ft tall, if they ever decide to move, they're going to have a lot of explaining to do.

11. Some seriously bad lighting

alt

Can you imagine how difficult it would be to try and change one of these bulbs? Or what would happen if one exploded? Yikes.

12. This toilet with no privacy

alt

The only view anyone should have when they're doing their business is their phone screen or a newspaper - if that.

13. Poop and eat in the same room

alt

I think that we can all agree that these two very different activities are a little too close for comfort.

14. Mind the gap

alt

There are few feelings worse than stubbing your toe, which why the owner of this house seriously needs to hire a bricklayer.

15. Proof that DIY is more expensive in the long run

alt

As is the case with so many things in life, if you buy something cheap, you often have to pay for it twice. And, quite frankly, judging by the size of the holes this fan has created, whoever did this is going to have to pay a lot more than that.

16. This very redundant door stop

alt

The only thing this could be used for now is a cat toy - if whoever misplaced it here even has a feline friend.

17. This balcony-streetlight hybrid

alt

We can only assume that some idiot at this council insisted on putting a light in this exact spot, ruining three balconies. This looks like it would have been a complex job too that could have easily been avoided if the lamp had been moved a few feet to the left...

18. Locked in

alt

It's one thing to ruin balconies with a streetlamp, it's another to render a room unusable by putting a radiator in front of it.

19. These seriously off-center windows

alt

This really does give a whole new meaning to the being off the mark.

20. A staircase that looks like the set of Jim Henson's Labyrinth...

alt

Unless whoever built this has the ability to walk upside down like the Goblin King, this a pretty useless staircase.

21. A small improvement

alt

Clearly, someone was upset about having to poop in public, so a genius gave them some privacy with a glass door.

22. A decking disaster

alt

I'm just hoping this picture was taken in the wake of a really nasty storm or hurricane and it's not the DIY disaster it looks like.

23. So close and yet so far

alt

As we all know, having two sinks can be very handy... providing, of course, that your tap can reach them both.

24. Straw-struck with inspiration

alt

What do you do when you can't afford a new tap? You use a straw instead. Obviously. (Please don't try this at home).

25. Showerhead

alt

It turns out that some DIY masterminds aren't just willing to use straws as taps but a can as a showerhead. This looks like the work of a student. Perhaps their college degree is in engineering and they're going to present this to their class...

26. This leaning house

alt

This house has either been inspired by the Leaning Tower of Pisa or it's some DIY gone seriously wrong. I think it's the latter.

27. The gate that will never need to be opened

alt

I think it's safe to say that whoever lives in this house can remove that sign.

28. Abstract art or a badly installed window?

alt

This is what happens when an amateur tries to install a window and doesn't use a level.

29. The staircase to nowhere

alt

It sounds like a bad Led Zeppelin song, doesn't it?

30. The garage that no car can enter

alt

You'd have thought someone would have had the good sense to cut down this tree before building the garage behind it.

31. Half a toilet

alt

There are actually no words for this.

32. Talk about a tight squeeze!

alt

The only feasible way that a person could use this toilet would be if they sat on it sideways. What an epic fail.

33. "Hey, dude, where's your toilet roll?"

alt

This would be a nightmare situation for any visitors at this house with a heavy load to drop off.

34. The escape that's no escape

alt

I dread to think what would happen if someone actually tried to use this in an emergency.

35. The most insane sink you'll ever see

alt

Hilariously, this bathroom was also plastered with tonnes of "Wet Floor" signs. No sh*t Sherlock.

36. Doors that don't close

alt

That's one way to make sure that you can see what's going on in your house at all times.

37. A seriously claustrophobic kitchen

alt

Those appliances are not going to last long positioned like that.

38. The door that will give your thighs a good work out

alt

That, or you'll just have to climb up to it using that green chair.

39. Duct tape can fix EVERYTHING

alt

No, it seriously can't.

40. This is why aliens won't contact us

alt

They've seen no signs of intelligent life from their spacecraft.

While it's all fun and games to laugh at these DIY fails, they're a reminder that you're most likely going to save yourself money (and time) in the long run by getting the job done properly in the first place. Let's face it, you wouldn't perform surgery without a medical license and years of experience, so you've got just as little right to start messing around with water faucets and electricity.
